The Hasan Baba Tomb, located in the Beylikova district of Eskisehir, has become a focal point for spiritual tourism due to its deep-rooted history tied to the lineage of the Prophet Muhammad and its extraordinary local legends.
Situated in the village of Imikler and open for visitation 24 hours a day, the complex is renowned for mystical stories that span from the Cyprus Peace Operation to the Bosnian War. Attracting over 1,500 visitors annually, the site features a unique burial tradition where the remains are said to lie above ground under simple sheets, fueling local claims that the bodies have remained undecayed for centuries.
Miracles from the Cyprus and Bosnian Wars
One of the most compelling legends surrounding the tomb dates back to the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation. According to local accounts, a pilot in distress was assisted by a mysterious figure who provided bombing coordinates and ensured the aircraft returned safely despite running out of fuel. When the pilot asked to meet his benefactor, the figure reportedly told him to look for "Hasan Baba in Imikler Village near Sivrihisar."
Another striking claim emerged during the Bosnian War in the 1990s. Residents reported seeing fresh blood on Hasan Baba’s shroud, interpreting it as a spiritual sign of the saint’s presence on the battlefield. Furthermore, stories of villagers being warned in dreams after attempting to move stones or wood from the tomb complex continue to be passed down through generations.
The tradition of undecayed remains
What sets the Hasan Baba Tomb apart from other shrines in Turkey is the physical state of the graves. The remains of Hasan Baba and his relatives are reportedly not buried under the soil but are placed at ground level, covered only by cloth sheets. Visitors often claim that the remains have not decomposed despite the passage of significant time, a phenomenon that has reinforced the site's reputation as a place of spiritual significance and mystery.
The complex, which also houses the tombs of Hasan Baba’s daughter-in-law and Haydar Baba, underwent its last major renovation in 1994. Local authorities state that the site continues to be a destination for those seeking spiritual solace or witnessing the enduring legends of the region.
