ERBIL, IRAQ — Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it has targeted the headquarters of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in the autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq using missiles and drones.

According to DW Türkçe, the operations against these groups, which Tehran accuses of "serving the interests of the West and Israel," come on the heels of allegations that US President Donald Trump aims to mobilize Kurds to overthrow the Iranian regime.

Targeted camps and casualties

The IRGC stated that three missiles successfully hit the bases of separatist structures, which they described as "armed groups hostile to the Islamic Republic."

Khalil Sanani, spokesperson for the exiled Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK), reported that three missiles were fired at a camp near Erbil where families also reside. According to Sanani, one security guard was killed and three people were injured in the attack. It was also reported that a camp belonging to the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI) in the same region was targeted by drones a day earlier.

US role and Trump allegations

Last month, five opposition groups, including the PDKI and PAK, announced the formation of a political coalition aimed at overthrowing the Islamic Republic of Iran and securing their right to self-determination. Following this development, reports claiming that US President Donald Trump wants to mobilize Kurdish groups in Iraq against Tehran and provide them with support have gained widespread attention.

It is alleged that Trump held phone conversations with Masoud Barzani, former President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), Bafel Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, and PDKI leader Mustafa Hijri to evaluate steps against Iran. Claims also suggest that the CIA is attempting to arm Kurds in the region to support uprisings.

Official response from Washington

When asked about these allegations, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that none of their objectives are based on supporting or arming a specific force. Regarding questions on whether the US would protect the Kurds, Hegseth provided the following assessment:

"We are aware of what other entities are doing, but our goals are not focused on that. The United States will stand shoulder to shoulder with its allies."
