TERNOPIL, UKRAINE — Amelia Grzeszko, an 8-year-old girl with Polish citizenship, and her mother Oksana were killed during a Russian drone strike on Ternopil on November 19, 2025, after their apartment was engulfed in flames.
The tragedy, documented by the Memorial memory platform, highlights the escalating human cost of the conflict as survivors recount the final, desperate moments of a mother and daughter trapped in their burning home. Found in each other's arms, their story has become a poignant symbol of the indiscriminate nature of the aerial attacks targeting Ukrainian urban centers.
The Final Call: Trapped Behind Jammed Doors
The events leading to the fatal strike began late on November 18, when Amelia’s grandmother, Halyna Dokhtor, brought the young girl home from school. Halyna waited for her daughter, Oksana, to return from work before heading to her own residence. The following morning, the routine was shattered by the sound of sirens and drones.
Oksana called her parents early on November 19 to check on their safety, reporting that "Shahed" drones were flying over their area. She informed them that she and Amelia had already dressed and were preparing to head to a nearby shelter. However, by 7:00 AM, the situation turned catastrophic. Oksana placed a final, harrowing call to her mother, crying out that they were suffocating because the apartment door had jammed, preventing their escape.
Identification and the Final Embrace
Upon receiving the desperate call, Amelia’s grandfather rushed to the scene with spare keys, assisted by a neighbor. By the time they arrived, the courtyard was filled with emergency responders and the bodies of those already pulled from the wreckage. Authorities initially barred them from entering the smoldering remains of the apartment building.
It was not until after 10:00 AM that investigators confirmed they had located the mother and daughter. Oksana was identified by a distinctive cross necklace with a small stone. The most heart-wrenching detail emerged from the recovery team: Oksana and Amelia were found lying together, tightly embracing one another in their final moments.
A Life Filled with Art and Joy
Amelia Grzeszko was born in the Polish city of Żary. She moved to Ternopil, her mother’s hometown, as an infant. In 2022, Oksana moved abroad for work, leaving Amelia in the care of her grandmother, Halyna, for three years. Oksana had only recently returned to Ukraine permanently to be with her daughter full-time.
Amelia was known in her school and apartment building as a vibrant, cheerful child who was loved by all. She was particularly passionate about her art classes and loved to draw. In addition to her artistic talents, she enjoyed dancing, reciting poetry, and was dedicated to her English language lessons. She is survived by her father, a half-brother, two grandmothers, and a grandfather.
The Impact of Localized Strikes on Civilian Populations
The strike on Ternopil is part of a broader pattern of "Shahed" drone usage that has frequently impacted residential areas far from the front lines. For families like the Grzeszkos, the transition from daily life to tragedy happens in a matter of minutes. The Memorial platform continues to archive these stories to ensure that the individual lives behind the rising casualty statistics are not forgotten.
The loss of Amelia and Oksana underscores the persistent danger faced by civilians in Western Ukraine, where air defense systems often struggle to intercept every incoming threat during mass drone swarms. As the community in Ternopil mourns, the story of the 8-year-old girl who loved to paint remains a stark reminder of the war's youngest victims.
