Musk responds to Bezos’ ‘tortoise’ post: Moon race heats up

CALIFORNIA, USA — SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has responded to a cryptic social media post by Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos, reigniting the public discourse surrounding the commercial space race to the Moon. While Bezos hinted at a slow-and-steady approach, Musk emphasized that the ultimate metric for success is the capacity to transport massive amounts of equipment for colonization.

The interaction began when Bezos shared a black-and-white close-up of a tortoise on the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) without a caption. The image was widely interpreted by the public and industry watchers as a reference to the fable of "The Tortoise and the Hare," positioning Blue Origin as the tortoise and SpaceX as the hare in the race to the lunar surface.

The tortoise and the hare analogy

Responding to a user who suggested Bezos implied Blue Origin would beat SpaceX to the Moon, Musk offered a diplomatic yet competitive take.

"They might land something on the Moon before SpaceX and that’s fine by me. I will be one of the first to congratulate them," Musk wrote. However, he pivoted the conversation toward long-term sustainability, adding, "However, what really matters for the future is being able to land millions of tons of equipment and people to build a self-growing city on the Moon."

Musk concluded his response with a nod to the fable, stating, "In this respect, perhaps we are (will) be more the tortoise than the hare for now."

SpaceX shifts focus to the Moon

This exchange comes amid a strategic pivot for SpaceX. While the company has dominated the commercial space industry for nearly two decades, Musk recently announced a shift in near-term priorities. Citing faster timelines and easier launch opportunities, SpaceX is prioritizing the construction of a self-sustaining city on the Moon over its Mars ambitions.

According to a recent post by Musk, a Moon city could be achieved in less than 10 years, whereas building a city on Mars would likely take more than two decades. Despite this shift, Musk clarified that the company has not abandoned its original vision. "The mission of SpaceX remains the same: extend consciousness and life as we know it to the stars," he stated.

Meanwhile, Blue Origin continues to ramp up its efforts, with CEO Dave Limp stating last year that the company is willing to "move heaven and Earth" to help NASA reach the lunar surface before Chinese space agencies.
