Bloomberg: Bilal Erdoğan seen as likely successor to President Erdoğan

ANKARA, TURKEY — A detailed analysis by Bloomberg has brought the long-speculated question of "Who will succeed President Erdoğan?" to the forefront of Turkish political discourse. Citing sources within the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), the report suggests that Bilal Erdoğan, the President's 44-year-old son, is increasingly being discussed behind closed doors as the potential heir to his father's political legacy.

The analysis highlights Bilal Erdoğan's rising visibility in state protocol and diplomatic circles as a signal of "controlled leadership preparation" in a political landscape dominated by his father for over two decades.

Rising diplomatic profile

The report points to Bilal Erdoğan's growing involvement in high-level diplomatic engagements as a key indicator of his rising status. He has accompanied his father on critical foreign visits, including meetings with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as well as trips to Pakistan, Malaysia, and Qatar. The frequency of news coverage regarding his activities by state agencies was also noted as evidence of a deliberate effort to boost his public profile.

Sources who spoke to Bloomberg on the condition of anonymity claimed that Bilal Erdoğan, who holds a master's degree in public policy from Harvard University, is undergoing an "informal political leadership training". These sources also alleged that he has built a loyal team and is already influential in high-level appointments within the party and the government.

Scenarios for 2028 and beyond

While President Erdoğan's current term is set to end in 2028 under the constitution, the report notes that the party administration is exploring formulas to extend his rule. However, a potential transition scenario was also outlined:

"If Erdoğan wins the election, he could later gradually hand over the party chairmanship to his son and appoint him as Vice President," the report suggested.

The Imamoğlu factor

The analysis also touched upon the state of the opposition. It noted that Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, widely seen as Erdoğan's strongest rival, is facing legal challenges involving allegations of "corruption and managing a criminal organization". The report interpreted the potential for a political ban on İmamoğlu as a development that clears the path and reduces obstacles for Erdoğan's chosen successor.

Bilal Erdoğan's own words in a recent interview with the Qatar-based Al Jazeera network were also scrutinized. "Tayyip Erdoğan worked for this... We who come after him must work to capture and elevate the same spirit," he stated, a comment viewed by many as a signal of his leadership aspirations.
